Hot Topics in Electronic Design Automation ( Charles Rosenthal, Joseph Damore ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1999-11)

Hardware Compilation: Translating Programs into Circuits ( Niklaus Wirth ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1998-06)

- Instead of separate programming languages and hardware description languages, a single language could conceivably permit us to compile parts of a program into instruction sequences for a conventional processor and other parts into circuits for programmable gate arrays.

Integrating CAD Tools for MEMS Design ( John R. Gilbert ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1998-04)

Gate-Array IC Design Tools ( Bala Gopakumaran ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1997-01)

Performance Modeling Using PDL ( Ranga Vemuri, Ram Mandayam, Vijay Meduri ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1996-04)

- Designers can write generic performance models in PDL. For individual designs, these models can be compiled into specific, executable models that yield valuable performance data.

VMW: A Visualization-Based Microarchitecture Workbench ( Trung A. Diep, John Paul Shen ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1995-12)

- Superscalar processor design requires increasingly sophisticated software tools. The visualization-based workbench described here addresses weaknesses common to most performance simulators: the lack of retargetability, visualization support, and interactive control.

OO-VHDL: Object-Oriented Extensions to VHDL ( Sowmitri Swamy, Arthur Molin, Burt Covnot ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1995-010)

- Object-oriented extensions to hardware description languages let engineers model systems at a higher level of abstraction, thus helping them manage design complexity and maximize component reuse.

An Integrated Multicomponent Synthesis Environment for MCMs ( Ranga Vemuri, Nand Kumar, RaghVutukuruu , Prasad Subba Rao, Praveen Sinha, Ning Ren, Paddy Mamtora, Ram Mandayam, Ram Vemuri, Jayanta Roy ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1993-04)

- The multicompact synthesis (MSS) integrated design environment for multichip modules (MCMs) is discussed. The MSS environment is centered in VHDL (very-high-speed integrated circuit hardware description language), WAVES (waveform and vector exchange specification), and PDL (performance description language). MSS provides four levels of automated synthesis support all the way from the behavioral level to MCM placement and routing, three levels of simulation support including behavioral, register, and switch levels, and tools for automated test-bench compilation and design validation for all synthesized designs. Three tutorial examples illustrate MSS algorithms and results. The primary example is the Find, which performs a bubble sort followed by binary search. It is used as the running example because it is small. Such small specifications, however, do not require MCMs. Two larger examples, the Move Machine and the Viper Microprocessor, are used to illustrate the results.

The Emerging STEP Standard for Product-Model Data Exchange ( ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1993-02)

- The International Organization for Standardization's (ISO's) standard for the exchange of product-model data (STEP) is discussed. The goal of this standard, officially named ISO 10303, is to facilitate the computer-readable exchange of the total information used to define an industrial product. As a standard method for digital product definition. STEP will support communications among heterogeneous computer environments. The standard will make it easier to integrate systems that perform various product life-cycle functions, such as design, manufacturing, and logistics support, and will help facilitate concurrent engineering. The current electronic domain standards are reviewed. The ways in which STEP differs from them are outlined.

The MIT Dice Project ( Duvvuru Sriram, Robert Logcher ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1993-01)

- A computer-based architecture program called the Distributed and Integrated Environment for Computer-Aided Engineering (Dice), which provides cooperation and coordination among multiple designers working in separate engineering disciplines, is described. Dice uses knowledge to estimate interface conditions between disciplines, records who used any piece of design data created by others and how such data were used, and checks for conflicts among disciplines, manufacturability, and manufacturing cost and schedule effects of design decisions.

Automated Concurrent Engineering in Designworld ( Pierre Nam Huyn, Michael R. Genesereth, Reed Letsinger ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1993-01)

- Designworld, an automated engineering system for digital circuits built from standard parts, is described. The system has integrated support for various phases in a product's life cycle, from design, through manufacture, to maintenance. The design for a product is entered into the system through a multimedia design workstation. The product is automatically built by a dedicated robotic cell. If necessary, the product, once built, can be returned to the system for automatic diagnosis and repair. Designworld's agent-based framework, implementation, and support of concurrent engineering are described.

Concurrent Evaluation of Machinability During Product Design ( Satyandra K. Gupta, Dana S. Nau, Guangming Zhang ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1993-01)

- An approach to evaluating the machinability of a part during the design stage, which performs systematic generation and evaluation of machining alternatives, is discussed. The results of the analysis provide feedback to the designer about problems that might arise with the machining and information to the manufacturing engineer about which machining processes and process parameters are most desirable.

Celesstin: CAD Conversion of Mechanical Drawings ( Pascal Vaxivière, Karl Tombre ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1992-07)

- Celesstin, a system that converts mechanical engineering drawings into a format suitable for CAD, is described. Celesstin integrates several modules in a blackboard-based interpretation system. Once a drawing has been digitized, a first processing step separates the text and the dimensioning lines from the pure graphics part. Celesstin vectorizes the graphics part and assembles the resulting lines into blocks, the basic elements for the technical entities that it creates. The result is transferred to the CAD system. Celesstin tries to match the extracted entities with the corresponding models from the CAD library. It puts the remaining blocks and lines into different layers of the CAD description. The system is based on the assumption that even when the vectorized drawing is distorted, it can be correctly interpreted by using knowledge about the representation rules used in technical drawings and about the manufacturing technology associated with the represented objects.

A Very High Speed Architecture for Simulated Annealing ( David Abramson ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1992-05)

- A class of scheduling problems that can be modeled by using very simple cost measures, namely, counting costs and distance-measure costs, is presented. These measures can be incorporated into a simulated annealing algorithm, providing a robust system for solving such scheduling problems. A special-purpose computer architecture that supports the simulated annealing of such problems is described. This architecture provides speeds greatly surpassing those of conventional workstations and supercomputers using the same algorithm.

Databases and Cell-Selection Algorithms for VLSI Cell Libraries ( Simon Y. Foo, Yoshiyasu Takefuji ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1990-02)

- The issues that must be addressed before commercial database management systems can be used to manage VLSI CAD data are defined. A survey is presented of approaches addressing four of the defined issues: design hierarchies and multilevel representations, design alternatives and version control, common interface between cell libraries and efficient cell selection based on given design constraints. A frame-based model is considered as a case study of the special-purpose design database management system approach. This framework for capturing design data is based on semantic networks. It is well suited for application-specific ICs, yet general enough for other CAD/CAM environments. Benchmark results for the selection algorithms that run on top of the frame-based database system are presented.

A Structured Approach for VLSI Circuit Design ( Ju Gu, Kent Smith ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1989-11)

- The authors review the research done on a structured, symbol-based IC design method called path programmable logic (PPL). They explain the logic partitioning strategy on which PPL is based. Compared to full-custom design methods, the PPL methods permits an order of magnitude reduction in design time. In most cases, the density of the circuits designed using the PPL method approaches or surpasses that of the practical full-custom designs. Compared to semicustom design techniques such as standard cells and gate arrays, PPL reduces the design time by a factor of three while improving the densities by a factor of two to three.

The Role of Visualization in the Simulation of Quantum Electronic Transport in Semiconductors ( Norman C. Kluksdahl, Alfred M. Kriman, David K. Ferry ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1989-08)

- Using the Wigner function to simulate semiconductor processes and depicting the results graphically is leading to new insights concerning these devices. The Wigner function, which uses a formalism that correctly incorporates all the quantum mechanics inherent in a problem, is the Fourier transform of the density matrix, taken with respect to a difference variable. The tunneling problem and the simulation of the resonant tunneling diode are discussed.

An Object-Oriented VLSI CAD Framework ( Rajiv Gupta, Wesley H. Cheng, Rajesh Gupta, Ido Hardonag, Melvin A. Breuer ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1989-05)

- It is shown, in the context of an actual prototype VLSI CAD framework called Cbase, how concepts such as data abstraction, property and operation inheritance, object specialization/generalization, code reusability, and polymorphism offered by object-oriented database management systems (OODBMSs) support rapid prototyping. The work was conducted on Vbase, a commercially available OODBMS, but the results and conclusions apply to any database with comparable capabilities. To implement the prototype user interface, the X11 toolkit, a windowing package that is also built around the object paradigm, was used.

Gentest: An Automatic Test-Generation System for Sequential Circuits ( Wu-Tung Cheng, Tapan J. Chakraborty ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1989-04)

- A description is given of Gentest, with emphasis on STG2, a sequential test generator that uses the Back test-generation algorithm and the Split value model. The performance of STG2 on a Convex C-1 computer is compared with that of its predecessor, STG1 and STG1.5. Results are also presented for another set of experiments for Gentest on a Sun 3/60 workstation.
