Managing Music in Orchestras ( Pierfrancesco Bellini, Fabrizio Fioravanti, Paolo Nesi ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1999-09)

- An electronic music management system may provide musicians, music publishers, and music schools with an unprecedented ability to create, update, and store expertly annotated scores.

Rescuing La Scala's Music Archives ( Goffredo Haus ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1998-03)

Creating Printed Music Automatically ( Gary M. Rader ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1996-06)

- The quality of printed music produced by software programs depends on the user's knowledge of copyist rules. This constraint-based technique automates uncomplicated, common notational tasks.

Technical Committee on Computer-Generated Music ( Denis L. Baggi ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1995-11)

Data Sonification: Do You See What I Hear? ( Tara M. Madhyastha, Daniel A. Reed ; IEEE Software Magazine 1995-03)

- The authors assert that, despite great strides in developing the graphical dimension of user interfaces, the auditory dimension has been neglected. They offer a tool for using sound to complement visual cues when working with complex data.

SoundWorks: An Object-Oriented Distributed System for Digital Sound ( Jonathan D. Reichbach, Richard A. Kemmerer ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1992-03)

- SoundWorks, an object-oriented distributed system that lets users interactively manipulate sound through a graphical interface, is discussed. The system handles digitally sampled sounds as well as those generated by software and digital signal processing hardware. An overview of the different types of sounds and window interfaces provided by SoundWorks and of the operations that modify these sounds is presented. The high-level architecture and the design of the SoundWorks system the protocol defined between the user interface code and client application, and the sound kernel specification that manages sounds and lines, performs operations on sounds, and interfaces to the digital hardware are described. The NEWS application programming environment, which provided the necessary primitive graphic items for a graphical window-based interface and offered an object-oriented approach for development of the SoundWorks system, is also discussed.

Toward an Expert System for Expressive Musical Performance ( Margaret L. Johnson ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1991-07)

- The development and implementation of an expert system that determines the tempo and articulations of Bach fugues are described. The rules in the knowledge base are based on the expertise of two professional performers. The system's input is a numeric representation of the fugue. The system processes the input using a transition graph, a data structure consisting of nodes where data is stored and edges that connect the nodes. The transition graph recognizes rhythmic patterns in the input. Once the system identifies a pattern, it applies a specific rule or performs a procedure. System output consists of a listing of tempo and articulation instructions. To validate the expert system, its output was compared with versions of fugues edited by one of the two experts used in developing the system. In tests with six fugues, the expert system generated the same editing instructions 85 to 90% of the time.

Algorithms for Musical Composition: A Question of Granularity ( Stephen W. Smoliar, Goffredo Haus, Alberto Sametti, Denis L. Baggi, Antonio Camurri, Corrado Canepa, Marcello Frixione, Renato Zaccaria, Yap Siong Chua, Robert Keefe ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1991-07)

- Early approaches to computer-generated music are examined, and it is argued that making music is concerned with a higher level of granularity than that of the notes on music paper. Work in artificial intelligence shows that low-level decisions such as the selection of individual notes may actually be subordinate to a model-based control structure, the models being examples of how problems have been resolved. It is suggested that the search for algorithmic rules should be directed by two questions: how to identify units of material of the appropriate granularity, and, given a collection of those units, how to properly assemble them.

A Computer Music System that Follows a Human Conductor ( Hideyuki Morita, Shuji Hashimoto, Sadamu Ohteru ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1991-07)

- An electronic orchestra with a complex performance database and MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) controllers is presented. This system responds to the gestures of a conductor through a CCD camera and a sensor glove. The processing of musical information is examined, and the system and its operation are described. It consists of a gesticulation system and the MIDI controllers. The human interface is also discussed. The first professional conductor who tried the system could direct it without special skills or knowledge of either MIDI or a computer. Tests revealed feedback effects on the behavior of the users through their auditory sense, which in turn suggested some ways to determine the parameters of tempo prediction and compensation. The system can play in concert with human performers and even as a part of a symphony orchestra.

Fugue: A Functional Language for Sound Synthesis ( Roger B. Dannenberg, Christopher Lee Fraley, Peter Velikonja ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1991-07)

- A description is given of Fugue, a language that lets composers express signal processing algorithms for sound synthesis, musical scores, and higher level musical procedures all in one language. Fugue provides functions to create and manipulate sounds as abstract, immutable objects. The interactive language supports behavioral abstraction, so composers can manage complex musical structures. Fugue's capabilities and an example of a score it generated are examined. The implementation of Fugue in a combination of C and XLisp, to run on Unix workstations, is discussed. An example of how Fugue's implementation of lazy evaluation works is given. Future extensions and applications of Fugue are indicated.

Formula: A Programming Language for Expressive Computer Music ( David P. Anderson, Ron Kuivila ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1991-07)

- An overview is given of Formula (an abbreviation for Forth Music Language), a language for controlling synthesizers that can model the expressiveness of a human performance. Formula supports algorithmic composition, interactive performance, and programmed interpretation of traditional scores. It uses concurrent processes that share a single address space and are scheduled by the runtime system. Note-playing processes compute sequences of pitches and play these pitches as notes or chords. Auxiliary processes are attached to note-playing processes or groups to supply note parameters such as volume, duration, and articulation. Input-handling processes execute when input arrives from a particular device. Two representative Formula programs are described.

Standard Music Description Language ( S.R. Newcomb ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1991-07)

- The Standard Music Description Language (SMDL), an application of the HyTime Hypermedia/Time-based document structuring facilities, is described. The discussion covers the domains of information that SMDL associates with any piece of music, the timing of cantus events, pitch in cantus events, gamut-based pitches, just-intoned pitches, user-defined functions for pitches, chords and chord symbols, instrumental and vocal sounds, and nonwestern music.

Guest Editor's Introduction: Computer-Generated Music ( Denis L. Baggi ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1991-07)

- No abstract available.

Recombinant Music: Using the Computer to Explore Musical Style ( David Cope ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1991-07)

- A research project called Experiments in Musical Intelligence (EMI) is discussed. One subprogram of EMI is an expert system that uses pattern recognition processes to create recombinant music, i.e. music written in the styles of various composers by means of a contextual recombination of elements in the music of those composers. This EMI subprogram separates and analyzes musical pitches and durations and then mixes and recombines the patterns of these pitches and durations so that while each new composition is different, it substantially conforms to the style of the original. The fundamental problems in building a program to produce effective recombinant music are identified. The three steps used by the EMI program are discussed. They are: pattern matching for characteristics of the composer's style, analyzing each component for its deep hierarchical musical function, and reassembling the parts sensitively with a technique drawn from natural-language processing. Some examples of EMI's output are examined.

Extending the Notion of a Window System to Audio ( Lester F. Ludwig, Natalio Pincever, Michael Cohen ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1990-08)

- With audio's increasing importance in computer applications, users will soon need presentation, management and organizational capabilities similar to visual window systems to avoid a confusing cacophony of multiple audio sources sounding at once. The ways in which an audio window system could be used are described. These include multimedia documents, spatial data management systems, and teleconferencing. The signal processing methods used to create hierarchical and spatial distribution among nearly arbitrary (not pure sine wave) audio sources are discussed. A prototype system, combining hierarchical and spatial processing functions with a computer-controlled switch, software and human input devices, is presented. Two envisioned implementations, a terminal-based system and a network-based server, are described. Preliminary work suggests that an effective audio window system needs much less complexity and fewer levels of digital signal processing precision than the current prototype.
